The case of bird-watchers is interesting. The average amateur bird-watcher will find facts that cannot be found in books, such as that bird X is at location Y at time T. However, these facts are not what the bird-watcher is trying to find out. The seeing is important. Suppose that the bird-watcher finds out, by overhearing a conversation, that a rare bird is present in the Waco Wetlands. She now knows the fact. But she still wants to see the bird.
