I am not making here any metaphysical claim about the nature of mental state types. If you think (as indeed I do) mental state types should be distinguished differently, then just form equivalence classes based on lack of subjective difference. There may also be vagueness about the boundaries of the equivalence classes. I don't think any of these technicalities affect the line of thought I am developing.
