Here is a reason to think that given a miracle, cross-category change can happen. God is not a substance in the sense in which we are substances. He is only a substance analogously. Call the sense of substance that finite things are "substance(f)". God, then, is not a substance(f). But, it seems, in the Incarnation, God became a substance(f)—he became a human being. Hence, it is possible to survive coming to be a substance(f). It seems plausible that one can likewise survive ceasing to be a substance(f). But all this surely takes a miracle, it must be done by a being that works at a deep ontological level, that controls being itself.
