Jesus said that the man who divorces and marries another commits adultery. But it is not unlikely that such a man is unaware of himself as committing adultery—he may, for instance, erroneously think that a civil divorce actually succeeds in terminating a marriage (a joining of a man and woman by God), whereas only the legal obligations have been terminated, and the moral requirements of fidelity remain. Hence, if Jesus' words apply, the man is committing adultery without knowing it.
